After a long political debate, permission was finally given on September 1, 1983 for the turnover of Alexander L. Kielland. In a local newspaper, this was dubbed “the world’s largest salvage operation”. The operation started on September 4th and finished in the afternoon of September 15th, 11 days later. By then, Kielland was on an even keel, i.e. 178 degrees. The Commission and other parties boarded Kielland and inspected the wreck. 6 dead were found, which was far fewer than expected.
